FESTIVAL OF DALAMATIAN KLAPA AND THE OMIŠ CULTURAL SUMMER
Ever since 1967 Omiš has been a host to all klapa lovers – it was in that year that the first Festival of Dalmatian Klapa took place in the town at the mouth of the river Cetina. The annual festival is in fact a competition in traditional Dalmatian close-harmony („a capella“) singing, which has contributed to the preservation of the culture of folk singing.
Klapa songs tell stories about the lives of Dalmatian fishermen and farm labourers, recount historical events or sing about love (one of the most famous klapa songs is „Ju te san se zaljubija“ – meaning „I fell in love with you“).
Apart from klapa singing the cultural programme of the Omiš Cultural Summer includes numerous concerts and recitals in churches and the cloister of the Franciscan monastery, theatre performances on the town squares, various holiday folk festivities, exhibitions, literary and musical evenings and other events.
